The error message the OS should have issued was: The total power consumption consumed by the USB devices exceeds the power rating of the USB chipset of your motherboard. So the moral of the story is, if for some reason you cannot figure out why adding one more usb device to your system gives you a USB needs more power error, consider the total power consumption of all your USB devices. You may need to use an externally powered USB hub to drive some of your more power hungry USB devices. Its a frustrating issue, because you think you have a large number of ports.
